Maple Cream Scones with Candied Pecans
I got my love of scones from my mom, back when they were not nearly as popular. These days they're a staple offering at fancy coffee shops but they're also one of the easiest pastries to make at home.

Satsuma Mandarin Orange Scones
There's very little that I like about winter but those first couple of months of the new year do have one high note and that is the abundance of winter citrus. It's always been strange to me that fresh fruit is in peak season when my city is blanketed in frozen snow.

Smoked Gouda and Thyme Scones
My love of scones dates back to childhood and my mother's fondness for them. And once I learned to make them, I turned out a batch every few weekends. But I admit it took me a while to go from making good scones to great ones.

Chocolate Chip Crumb Topped Muffins
Last week I was staring at a display of muffins at the store and one crumb topped version insisted on coming home with me. Naturally I agreed. (What January diet?)

Currant Scones
It snows, it warms up, it snows, it warms up. All month long. Rinse and repeat. I know it's just winter's last hurrah before exiting for the year but I'm a little over it. Yesterday was another inclement weather day so I did the only logical thing - I baked.

Strawberry and Honey Oat Scones
I'm always fascinated by cooking / lifestyle programs that talk about entertaining over breakfast. I mean, I love entertaining. Come for lunch, come for tea, come for dinner or drinks. It's all good. But please don't come for breakfast. Unless you either enjoy cold, half eaten toast or like having your breakfast around Noon. I just can't fathom it any other way.

Special K® Red Berries Breakfast Scones
This is a sponsored recipe created by me on behalf of Special K Red Berries.
I have a love / hate relationship with breakfast. The part of me that wants something super fast so I can get on with my busy day battles with the part that wants to make sure what I eat is healthy. And that frequently leaves me standing in the cereal aisle on shopping day, endlessly looking at nutrition labels while making sure whatever it is will taste better than the box it comes in. Sometimes I find a winner.

Blueberry Cornmeal Muffins
When you see a basket full of little muffins do you think "awe, how cute?" I don't. I think it's boring and sad. A portion controlled basket of boring sadness. Enough that it makes me avoid muffins. Yes, I know the ones from the good bakery, the ones as big as your head, are considered too big a portion and should probably be shared or something. But that's too bad because that's the only size muffin I want and those are the ones I made. We can eat lettuce tomorrow.

Dried Plum and Honey Scones
When I was growing up, my father used to eat prunes and tell me they were healthy. But all I saw, when he offered me one, was a wrinkled, shriveled mess. I couldn't image what kind of tree had grown it and I certainly wanted nothing to do with it. And he would chuckle and continue eating his prunes. At some point in my adult life, somebody clued me in that prunes were dried plums. Plums? Really? I like plums. I eat plums. They're really plums, huh? Hmm.

Scones Spoken Here
If you had visited my home over the weekend, you would have noticed a thick layer of flour dust covering the entire kitchen, a large section of the dining room table and most of the dog. (She sits at my feet when I cook and I can't make her move.) The reason for this lapse in housekeeping is that I've been baking scones. Lots and lots of scones. My scone-loving mother taught me to appreciate them but she always bought them from a bakery. I've spent my adult years in search of the perfect scone recipe and, while I've made lots of good ones, I'm always looking for the "perfect" version.

Banana "Nut" Scones
- “This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Post Pebbles, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #PostWalgreens http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV.”
Did you know that February is American Heart Month? Yes, I realize that many of us spent the weekend munching on Valentine's candy but let's move past that right now. To help us eat heart healthy, the folks at Post cereals contacted me to let me know that they've partnered with Walgreens to offer some of their healthy cereals. You'll be able to pick up a box of Post Honey Bunches of Oats, Fruity Pebbles, Great Grains or Grape Nuts so, that's just what I did.

Orange Cranberry Scones
Today is the first day back to "reality" after the long holiday break but it's OK (mostly) and I'm excited to get a fresh start (sort of)... At least I can say that we relaxed and enjoyed ourselves over the break. We had that fun Christmas weekend out at Montauk, we visited family and we ate and drank well. Yesterday was spent vegging out in our jammies and watching movies. We ate the leftover New Year's Eve brisket, we ate creamy potato soup, we finished off the holiday cheesecake and we ate these scones.

Peach Scones
Continuing our love affair with peaches during National Peach Month, we present peach scones recipe round two. What happened to round one, you ask? Well, round one was definitely not blog-worthy. I'd never made peach scones before so I followed someone else's recipe and ended up with scones that were dry, under sweetened (despite using very sweet peaches), contained too little fruit and lacked flavor. They'd looked so fetching in the photo but with so many problems, I decided to scrap the recipe rather than tweak it.

Heart Shaped Chocolate Chip Scones
What to make for a romantic breakfast on Valentine's Day? Brian's not a big breakfast eater so he's not interested in the full breakfast-in-bed tray of morning fare. But he does love my scones with a big pot of morning coffee.

Glazed Ginger Scones
The flavor of gingerbread is, of course, a holiday staple. Traditionally made with molasses, gingerbread cakes are dark but this easy scone recipe lightens up the taste. With plenty of flavorful ginger and a bit of spice, a batch of these freshly baked scones won't be around for long!

Pumpkin Scones
I love how these pumpkin shaped scones turned out. But... truthfully, that wasn't exactly what I set out to do. Over the weekend I'd planned to bake a batch of pumpkin flavored scones - just basic scones with a little glaze on top. But somehow the dough was just too loose and there was no way to pat it out and shape it.

Low Fat-Low Sugar Almond Scones
Cookies and milk are great but there's a certain warm pleasure that comes from a good pot of afternoon tea and a basket of freshly baked scones. Traditional scone recipes do contain less sugar than other pastries but the butter and cream laden batter makes them only a rare indulgence. This quick and easy recipe, however, removes most of the sugar and fat while still providing a delightful afternoon treat. I vary the recipe based on whatever ingredients I have in the house. On this Sunday afternoon, a leftover bag of slivered almonds from Passover begged to be used up. Enjoy!
